The memorandum of understanding (MoU) for the establishment of the campus was signed by the Ministry of Education of India and the Ministry of Education and Vocational Training of Zanzibar.

The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) is expanding its reach beyond India and will set up a campus in Zanzibar, Tanzania. The memorandum of understanding (MoU) for the establishment of the campus was signed by the Government of India, the Ministry of Education, IIT Madras, and the Ministry of Education and Vocational Training of Zanzibar. Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan said that the establishment of the IIT campus in Zanzibar is a significant step towards the internationalization of Indian education. He added that the move is in line with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which recommends that high-performing Indian universities be encouraged to set up campuses outside the country.

The Zanzibar campus will be the first overseas campus of an IIT. It will be a testament to the global ambition of IIT Madras and will open doors for deeper research collaborations with leading academic institutions worldwide.

The first IIT was established in India in 1951 in Kharagpur, West Bengal. Over the years, the IITs have expanded all over the country and there are now a total of 23 IITs. The establishment of the IIT campus in Zanzibar is a sign of India’s commitment to expanding its educational horizons and fostering innovation. A senior official from IIT Madras said that the admission criteria for the university will be decided by IIT Madras and degrees will be conferred by the institute. IIT Madras will also be responsible for planning pedagogical strategies for the offshore campus.

The establishment of the IIT campus in Zanzibar is a significant milestone in the India-Tanzania partnership. It is a testament to the strong ties between the two countries and their shared commitment to education and innovation. The campus is expected to provide high-quality education to students from Zanzibar and the wider region and to boost economic development in the country.

Cosmic rays are streams of tiny particles that race around our galaxy and impact the atmosphere of our planet. Protons make up the majority of them, although occasionally atomic nuclei and electrons are also present. They all have an electric charge, which causes their courses to diverge and jumble as they travel across the magnetic field of our galaxy.


This successfully conceals their origin by making it impossible to determine their initial path. However, when the cosmic ray particles strike the atmosphere close to supernova remnants, they create gamma rays, some of the most energetic radiation types known to man.


The erratic magnetic fields close to supernova remnants catch these particles. They go through the shock wave of the explosion several times, each time gaining energy and speed. They will eventually lose their grip on the supernova remnant and careen off into the vacuum of space. The Large Hadron Collider, the most potent particle accelerator ever created, can produce 10 times as much energy as these particles.


These high-energy extreme cosmic particles are produced by PeVatrons, which have shown to exist in a few sites. Naturally occurring supernova remnants make up many of these contenders. But only a small number of the 300 known remains produce gamma rays with energy high enough to qualify as PeVatron candidates.


“This thing has attracted a lot of interest for a time, but we need to demonstrate that it is an accelerator of protons before we can call it a PeVatron. The problem is that the emission can be produced by electrons that have been accelerated to a few hundred TeV. In a news release, Henrike Fleischhack from the Catholic University of America in Washington and NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, said, “Now, with the aid of 12 years of Fermi data, we think we’ve proven the case that G106.3+2.7 is certainly a PeVatron. The study article’s co-authors include Fleischhack.

The prolonged tail of G106.3+2.7 produced GeV (billion electron volt) gamma rays, which Fermi’s main instrument, the Large Area Telescope, was able to detect. Even more intense gamma rays from the same place were captured by the VERITAS equipment at the Fred Lawrence Whipple Observatory in southern Arizona. Observatories in Mexico and China have recorded TeV readings in the region explored by Fermi and Veritas. TeV stands for 100 trillion electron volts.

Below 10 GeV, there was no discernible emission from the remnant’s tail. It was discovered that there is another source of radiation since the pulsar’s interference is minimal above that level. The team’s thorough study strongly suggests that PeV protons are the particles responsible for the gamma-ray emission.

The second day of the festival is traditionally known as the “Day of Dogs” or “Kukur Tihar”, which was celebrated on Saturday. In Nepal, dogs are worshipped as the messengers of Yama, the God of death, as well as the guardians.

On the day, dogs are adorned with flowers, and vermillion tika (mark on forehead) and offered food as part of the “Kukur Tihar” ceremony. The dogs are worshipped early in the morning for their devotion and sincerity towards their owners. A similar ceremony was observed at Sneha’s Care, a private animal shelter that hosts more than 160 canines, some with permanent injuries, on Saturday.

Sneha Shrestha, the proprietor of the animal shelter, came up with the idea of rescuing and treating the helpless dogs, left on the roadside after her own pet was poisoned to death.

Shrestha said her pet dog was poisoned to death by a neighbour. “The name of my dog was Jara. After the death of my dog, I went into depression, stopped having food, even liquids. It is my pet dog who inspired me to host these animals and some dogs have found a new life at this animal shelter,” she said, adding dogs and their roles are mentioned in various Hindu religious books.

In the Rigveda, one of the Vedas in Hindu religion, Samara, the mother of dogs assists Indra, the ruler of heaven, in retrieving stolen cattle. The Mahabharat has a plot of Yudhisthira’s refusal to enter heaven without his devoted dog, which represents Dharma and the path of righteousness.

The dhaba located in South Delhi’s Malviya Nagar came into limelight after the YouTube blogger uploaded a video on October 7, highlighting the hardship being faced by Prasad and his family due to lack of customers. The video received tremendous response on social media and a large number of people visited the three-decade-old Baba ka Dhaba and donated money.

But the 80-year-old owner has accused Wasan of misappropriating the money by carrying out transactions in the latter’s bank account. “I have registered a complaint against Gaurav Wasan because of his perfidy. Gaurav Wasan received all the money in his as well as his wife and brother’s bank accounts,” Prasad told ANI on Monday.

Prasad said that he had received Rs 75,000 cash from people who had come to his eatery after the video went viral. Later, Wasan allegedly asked him to deposit the amount in bank, citing it’s not safe to keep the money on person. The YouTuber also told Prasad that he has received an amount of Rs 2 lakh for his dhaba. However, the octogenarian alleged that the YouTube blogger “did not hand him any receipt of the money received.”

Following this Prasad filed a complaint against Wasan and his associates on Sunday for cheating, mischief, criminal breach of trust, criminal conspiracy, misappropriation of funds and others, besides causing wrongful loss to him and wrongful gain to them.

When ANI tried to contact Wasan on Monday over the phone, he was unavailable.
